White noise for babies, on any phone.

Updated · BusyAudio

Lots of parents keep a steady sound going at nap time: white noise, a fan, or a rhythmic “shhh.” It can help cover household noise, the doorbell and the dog, and it gives your own shushing voice a break.

You don’t need a dedicated machine to try it. Here’s how to set up free baby sleep sounds on the phone you already have, plus a few common-sense habits most parents follow.

Which sound to try first

  • White Noise: the classic. Bright and even, great at covering sudden sounds.
  • Baby Shush + Heartbeat: a soft rhythmic shush over a muffled heartbeat.
  • Fan / AC Hum: familiar and steady, good for travel.
  • Brown Noise: deeper and softer, if white noise feels too sharp.

Our “Baby out cold” mix layers shush and heartbeat over gentle white noise, a nice starting point you can tweak with the volume sliders.

Setup on a phone

  • Open BusyAudio and add it to your home screen so it opens in one tap.
  • Plug the phone in if you’ll run it for a long nap.
  • Place the phone across the room, not in the crib or right next to your baby’s head.
  • Choose the timer: 30, 60 or 90 minutes with a gentle fade, or “Until I stop.”
  • Turn on Do Not Disturb so notifications don’t interrupt the sound.

On iPhone, BusyAudio keeps playing with the silent switch on, and the sound continues if you lock the screen in most cases.

Volume habits most parents follow

Common advice from pediatric groups is to keep sound machines at a moderate volume, roughly the level of a quiet shower, and at a distance from the crib. A good rule of thumb: if you have to raise your voice to talk over it near the crib, it’s too loud.

We’re not doctors, and nothing here is medical advice. If you have questions about your baby’s sleep or hearing, your pediatrician is the best person to ask.

When you’re out and about

Because BusyAudio runs in the browser, it works in a hotel room, at the grandparents’ or in the car without an app download. After you’ve played a sound once, the installed app can work offline too.
